Creative Adaptation – Simone

For this ergon, I wanted to draw my interpretation of the scene with the vine women. Specifically, I wanted to draw the part where the men began turning into vines as well mainly because I felt that it challenged my imagination, and I wanted to see what it would look like on paper.

Whenever I looked up illustrations of this scene, they only depicted the top half of the scene. I found this interesting because this felt like an important part of the scene, and many of the illustrations did not shy away from the use of grotesque imagery. This made me wonder whether a depiction of the men turning into vines that is true to the text is possible.

In creating my drawing, I found difficulties when I tried to depict the transition from the vine part to the human part, and the vine part ended up looking more like a tree trunk due to the width necessary to have humans coming from the top. I also found it hard to illustrate the texture of their hair while including the leaves and grapes. In the end, I chose to draw the scene in a more cartoonish and comical way. While this was not what I was originally trying to draw, I think that it fits with the tone of True History better than a more realistic drawing would have.
