Week Seven: Lucian

For the rest of the semester, our focus will be on Lucian’s Ἀληθῆ Διηγήματα, usually called “True History” or “A True Story,” sometimes by its Latin name Vera Historia (which is why the abbreviation for the text is VH). Here are some key resources for you:

  • Greek text and commentary online
    • This is the Dickinson Classical Commentaries website for the text; in my view, the most helpful way to read it. Commentary is displayed on the same page, and each chapter of the text has its own vocab list.
  • Greek text and commentary pdf
    • If you’d prefer, you can download a pdf of the same text and commentary
  • English Translation (Book 1 only, Book 2 coming soon)
    • For assignments in English, please read from this translation by Diskin Clay (2021); do not waste time trying to read other free online translations, which will be mostly from the unreadable 1913 Loeb edition
