Spring Schedule

NOTE: this was the schedule for Spring 23 (Greek 1). For the current semester schedule, click here.

Week One: Introduction

Wednesday, January 18: ZOOM

We will meet over Zoom for our first class session today; check your email or contact mfarmer@haverford.edu for the link.

Today we’ll spend some time getting to know each other and getting an overview of our plans for the course.

Before class today, please read the Syllabus, and bring in any questions you have about how the course will work.

If you’d like to get started learning the alphabet, check out the Open University’s Introduction to Ancient Greek. I recommend working through in the following order:

  • First, click “Sounds” check out the full Greek alphabet and its associated sounds here. Click the Greek words in the right column to hear the sounds pronounced. Pay particular attention to lower case letter forms.
  • Next, click “Letters” to start quizzing yourself on the different letter shapes. Work through a few of these quizzes.
  • Finally, click “Words” to try your hand at spelling out a few Greek words.

You can also start practicing with our course vocab by joining our Cerego class here.

Friday, January 20: NO CLASS

Sorry to say I remain a little under the weather, so we won’t be meeting as a class today. We’ll resume our regular meetings in person next week.

Using the time you would have been in class, please:

  • Complete the course survey
  • Join our Cerego course
  • Start practicing the Greek alphabet using the Open University’s Introduction to Ancient Greek.

Week Two: The Alphabet and Chapter One

Monday, January 23

Before you start working today, read “How to Prep for Class.”

Before the start of class, start preparing Ath. 1α:

  • Begin working with Cerego on the vocab
  • Read the text four times, focusing on pronunciation and reading the alphabet:
    • First, listen to me read it and follow along
    • Next, read it aloud yourself
    • Now work back through slowly, marking words you find difficult to read or pronounce
    • Finally, listen to me read the text once more, following along with clearer understanding of the letters.
  • Finally, copy the text:
    • write it out by hand
    • OR enable a Greek keyboard on your computer (find instructions by googling your operating system, and look for a Polytonic Greek keyboard)
    • Write slowly, focusing on forming the letters correctly, and bring your copy in to class.

Wednesday, January 25

Before you start working today, take another look at “How to Prep for Class.”

Before the start of class, finish prepping Ath. 1α:

  • Keep working with Cerego on the vocab
  • Read the text four times, this time starting to focus on what the text means:
    • First, listen to me read it and follow along
    • Next, read it aloud yourself
    • Third, work through carefully, taking notes, marking questions, looking things up
    • Fourth, read aloud again, with clear understanding
  • Complete the homework exercises

Friday, January 27

Before the start of class, start preparing Ath. 1β:

  • Begin working with Cerego on the vocab
  • Read the text four times, focusing on pronunciation and reading the alphabet:
    • First, listen to me read it and follow along
    • Next, read it aloud yourself

    • Finally, listen to me read the text once more, following along with clearer understanding of the letters.
  • Finally, copy the text:
    • write it out by hand

    • First, listen to me read it and follow along
    • Next, read it aloud yourself

Wednesday, February 1

Before the start of class today, please:

  • For each section of the chapter 1 homework (α or β), choose one other student and check their work in the chapter 1 homework doc
    • If possible, choose a student who has not received corrections, and choose a different student in each section
    • Mark places where you think there might be something wrong or where you don’t understand their work with comments
    • Feel free to mark work you think is outstanding or that you’ve checked and found no errors

Friday, February 3

Today we’ll have our first in-class quiz! It will last 10-15 minutes, and focus on 1-2 sentences from the chapter readings. Here are some suggestions for preparing:

  • This quiz will be based on the main chapter readings (on pg. 2 and 10). Your best strategy for review will be to work with those texts, and ensure you understand what they mean, and why.
  • You will be expected to know vocabulary that appears in the chapter vocab lists. Working with Cerego is your best strategy for learning this vocab.
  • You will not be expected to know detailed information about vocabulary that appears in the notes below the reading, but you will be expected to understand broadly what is happening in the reading with or without those notes.
  • Studying together is much better than studying apart! Make a point of finding ways to connect with other students in the class to prepare together.
  • Finally, remember that quizzes in this course are diagnostic tools, not chances to fail. The default expectation is that whenever you take a quiz, you’ll have some mistakes to revise, and that by revising you earn full credit for the quiz.

Week Four: Chapter Two

This chapter introduces our first enslaved character and contains an overview of the system of slavery in Greek society. The textbook does a woefully inadequate job of introducing this topic, and we’ll be discussing the realities of Greek slavery in class. If you’d like to read more about Greek enslavement, with a particular emphasis on recovering the voices of enslaved persons, I highly recommend starting with Sara Forsdyke’s Slaves and Slavery in Ancient Greece: introduction here; full text here.

Monday, February 6

Before the start of class, prep Ath. 2α:

  • Start working with Cerego on the vocab
  • Read the text four times, this time focusing on meaning:
    • First, listen to me read it and follow along
    • Next, read it aloud yourself
    • Third, work through carefully, taking notes, marking questions, looking things up
    • Fourth, read aloud again, with clear understanding
  • Complete the homework exercises

Wednesday, February 8

Before the start of class, prep Ath. 2β:

  • Start working with Cerego on the vocab
  • Read the text four times, this time focusing on meaning:

    • Next, read it aloud yourself
    • Third, work through carefully, taking notes, marking questions, looking things up
    • Fourth, read aloud again, with clear understanding
  • Complete the homework exercises

Thursday, February 9th

Between the end of class Wednesday and the start of class Friday, you should meet with your group to correct your homework document and review both of the chapter readings to ensure everyone in the group understands the material. It is up to you to decide how to structure these meetings but my expectation is that you should meet for 30-45 minutes.
